Applying for Performing Arts College/University

Applying for performing arts college is exciting.   It does however take a lot of time and effort and can become quite a stressful process. Here at Future Performers we want to make it as easy as possible by providing as much information as possible right here on our website.

First things first, talk to your family.  This process can be costly and they will be the ones supporting you and depending on their circumstances, it could affect your choice.  If for example you are only 16, you won’t be able to apply for the degree courses, where student loans and finance are readily available.  There are colleges that offer funding but this is awarded at their discretion. It may be more financially viable to do a 2 year fully funded BTEC course and then apply for a degree.   We cover this in much more detail in our “Funding Explained” and “Courses Explained” sections

SO . . . .

When can I apply?

Most performing arts colleges publish their audition dates in August or September. Make a list of their dates and check their application deadlines.  Most colleges finalise their intake by April but some might audition all the way through to July. It is advisable to get an audition slot as early as possible, particularly if applying for a degree, as the UCAS deadline is normally around mid-January.

Top Tips

  • Keep checking the college websites for audition dates.
  • Read the application form carefully.
  • Research the college well.

How to find the right college for me?

This is a question so many students ask. Our advice is to find out when they have Open and Taster Days.  Some have days where you can take part in classes and also watch current students in action. If a college doesn’t have open days, they are usually happy for you to contact them and arrange a visit to look around and ask any questions you may have.

Many colleges run Summer Schools and these are a fantastic way of experiencing time at the college as well as participating in classes with their faculty. You will also meet other students who are probably considering applying too.

PLEASE NOTE - Depending on where you live, it can be costly to travel to Open Days.  Summer Schools can be pricey, so make sure that they are a real contender in your audition choices. Remember some students will thrive in a big busy college and others will be happier in a smaller environment.  You might want to be close to London and are not worried about living far away from home, or alternatively you may want to be closer to home or even to commute. There are lots and lots of colleges to choose from that will suit your needs.

How do I apply?

Most students apply for several colleges and it is worth bearing in mind that they will all have slightly different requirements.  You can apply by going to the college’s website and downloading the application form. Make sure you read every section carefully and provide as much detail and information as possible.

You might have to write a personal statement or fill in a section about why you would like to train there. Here is your opportunity to show your personality and also to show them that you have taken time to research their college.  This can be a great way to stand out before you have even entered the audition room.

Top Tips

  • Read the application carefully.
  • Check and check again.
  • Get someone-else to check your application before sealing the envelope!

Will I need to send Photos?

The college will stipulate clearly on the application form what photos they require.  Some ask for some simple dance positions or perhaps one of you standing, feet together, face on in your dancewear.  Nearly every college will ask for a headshot. It’s important this is a recent photo and it looks like you!  This is their reference to you throughout the whole process.

PLEASE NOTE - You may choose to have your photos taken professionally but this is not essential.   However, they must be of good quality with good light and a plain background. You want them to remember you when referring to your audition notes, so give yourself the best chance!

Top Tips

  • Use a plain background.
  • Ask your dance teacher to help if you are unsure.
